There is motivation and there is purpose

I can be very motivated and really want something but there has to be purpose which makes me really, really want something. I realize this may sound hokey but you know what I mean.

I am really trying hard not to gain my weight back. I have lots of reason to be motivated - I like the way I feel healthy, the way I look, the way my clothes fit but yet I haven't been able to make that mean enough to get me on plan for one whole day. 5 weeks ago Michael had us pick a weight that we would weigh for Valentines. We had to have a reward so I asked Jerry to take me downtown for the night (we have a coupon for a free night). He said yes but that still hasn't been enough. In fact in the last 2 weeks I gained and last week I was out of the free zone (above 139). Then.....

Last Saturday, Michael invited the class to attend a meeting on Sunday at Burien that would be 2 hours of Success Stories. I left church and made my way there. It was amazing. 5 different women told their story. Each was a different story and each told it a different way. All could have been WW leaders. Many of them had started and stopped WW many times. In fact, only one of them was a first timer. Not all of them had reached goal.

The first woman will be 60 this year and she wanted to be the healthiest 60 she could be. Her best friend had recently lost 40 lbs with WW so she decided to try it. It has worked for her. She has lost about 40 lbs and has 10 lbs to go before her birthday in 2 months. She is focused and she is going to get there.

The 2nd lady was 6' tall and had been a model when she was young. She said that when she came to WW she confessed to the leader she just didn't have time for the plan. Her dad was in the hospital and she was running his business and had a family. So the leader said let's start slow. Drink your water and get in 5 veggies/fruit a day. And each week she added something else from the plan. She still has a way to go but the found a way to make it work. She has found a way to walk for her activity and she looks great. She told a story about her WW leader going to Standford to see her daughter for the weekend and gained 3 lbs. What had impressed this lady was the fact the WW leader was not remorseful. It simply happened and now back to program.

The 3rd lady was a woman in her late 20s who dreaded the activity. So she started to walk and it was boring. So she entered a 5K and walked it. After several, she found herself waiting in line and the lady in front of her asked her why she didn't run it. She looked at her in disbelief, "didn't she see what I looked like?" Then she thought about it and decided she could do it so she walked/ran it. Last year she completed 18 5ks and a half marathan and she is training for a marathon in May. She did admit that last year she didn't train. She just signed up and did them but she is training for the Marathon. She still has weight to lose but she is loving her life.

The fourth lady was over 60 and admitted she had tried WW over 6 times. Sometimes she got close to goal before she dropped out and sometimes she didn't make it a month. What made this time different? She needed to make it a lifestyle change this time because she was not getting any younger. She had on a pair of jeans with a wide belt and tee with a shawl and she is now a foxy African American woman who plays coed softball.

The next lady was a hair dresser and and the last lady had been in Europe and saw her pictures and decided that was not the way she wanted to look.

Between all of them they had covered every trail I have had and they figured out a way to get around it. I was in awe. It so inspired me that I have drank my water every day, stayed within my points and had activity Fri and Sat. The result was a 3.8 lbs loss!!! One of my biggest single week losses.

I tried to put my finger on what it was that so inspired me. I think it was how they acted. They were beaming, confident, making lifestyle changes and were loving who they were. I WANT THAT!!!!

Potato Soup - Yummy

Jerry has been craving potato/leek soup so I searched the WW Web Site and found a great one.

Believe - accept as true, trust, have faith in

BELIEVE - Transitivo (spanish) - accept as true, trust, have faith in

When things are going well, it is easy to believe. But when things start to go sideways, or fall completely apart, you lose faith. You have difficulty remembering what and why you believe. When you see someone struggling, it is hard to say the words they need to hear so they will continue to believe.

Niagara Falls has thehighest flow rate
of any waterfall in the world and at one point has a vertical drop of more than 165 feet and is about 2600 feet across at the widest point. 1 Mile = 5280 Feet, almost 1/2 mile across. There are several falls that make up Niagara Falls, who knew. The image I had in my mind was one falls. I regress.

For a couple of summers in the mid-19th century, many thousands of Americans thrilled to the exploits of a Frenchman who, on several occasions, crossed Niagara Falls on a tightrope. He was called Blondin, or sometimes The Great Blondin, although his real name was Jean Francois Gravelet. On June 30, 1859, he made the first transit of the gorge below the Falls.

After that first walk, he did it quite a few more times, always adding some new daredevil element. Blondin crossed Niagara Falls on stilts, on a bicycle, blindfolded, at night… one time he pushed a wheelbarrow along the tightrope; in the wheelbarrow was a stove. When Blondin reached the middle of the tightrope, he got out the stove, upon which he cooked an omelet. He ate the omelet and then completed the crossing.

I first heard of Blondin’s exploits at Weight Watchers. The leader cited Blondin to illustrate the difference between mere beliefs and actual faith. He told a story that may or may not be factual, but the gist of it was that Blondin was discussing with an associate the next variation for crossing Niagara Falls. He had hit upon the idea of walking that tightrope, 160 above the water, while pushing someone in a wheel barrow.

Blondin asked his friend if he thought it was possible. “Of course,” the guy said. “After what you have already accomplished, it should be no problem to cross the Falls with a person in a wheel barrow.”

Blondin nodded his agreement and then responded: “Will you be that person?”

Although the WW Leader's point about having the courage of our convictions was made in a health context, but it applies to ethical, political, matrimonial, and spiritual issues as well.

The WW Leader asked if we would get in his wheel barrow?

Did we believe and have the courage of our convictions. The Leader went around the room and asked each person what did they believe. I heard....

  • I believe I can eat healthy, exercise and enjoy it and be happy with life.

  • I believe the WW plan will help may change my eating habits and improve my health.

  • I believe that drinking water is essential.

  • I believe I can stand up to my friends when they say "don't worry about it, you are beautiful as you are."

  • I believe my weight doesn't definite me.

What do I believe?

  • My lifestyle can be based on eating healthy and getting activity and I will be a happier, better person for it.

  • My eating and activity directly influence my self esteem and how I handle other things in my life.

  • My family and friends will always be there for me and keep me from drowning in the well.

  • I can find a job that will allow me to maintain my priority of family and friends, give me financial security and enrich me as a person.

  • I can have patience.

  • I can find inner peace.

  • How successful I am is not what is important (albiet weight loss, employment, etc) - it is what I learn that matters most.

  • Balance is key to success and happiness.

What do you believe? When you first start something - marriage, Weight Watchers, a new job, gym routine, the Lord Jesus Christ - you have a belief. You are passionate! You know you believe and you can do what it takes to act according to that belief, no matter what.

I'm writing my beliefs down and tweaking them as I learn so when times get rough, they will be there to remind me.

Sunday...9/13/09

This morning I started out with my Yogurt Berry Crunch. An hour later I was dragging. I hadn't slept very good but usually I'm going strong by 830am.

This I realized what the problem was..... for the last 4 weeks I have been starting my day with my Thyroid medicine and 16 oz of ice water. I down the water like it was a beer. The article said it would jump start my metabolism and it really does. I can't believe it. You have to try it.

Jerad met me at Irene's so that went a lot better than anticipated. Then it was errand - grocery store and Costco. I took the time to eat before going to the store and that saved me. I didn't buy everything in the store and I stuck to my list. At Costco I made it by the give away snacks - and the smell was killer.

I needed a reward so I got the non-fat yogurt at Costco. It's 390 calories - 8 points. Usually I ask them to only give me half but today I ate the whole thing. Oddly enough, it was too much. I felt kind of yucky. Next time I'm back to half.

Worked in the yard to get some activity in and then salad for dinner. Whew...time for bed! Talk to you soon.

A New Week

My weigh-in didn't turn out as bad as I thought. I was only up 1/2 pound. Time to get serious.

Today's session was on eating out.

E Eyeballing your portions - How do you make sure you don't under estimate? Does it fit in the palm of your hand.
A Always eat the filling foods first
T Track everything
I I can do this
N Never starve before you go out to eat. Some find it helpful to eat snack first.
G Get a menu on line and know what you will eat before your arrive.

O Use WW "Good Health Guidelines"
U Use weekly point allowance (35 pts)
T Take note of body signals. Usually when you sigh when eating your body means you are full.

Most restaurants will steam vegetables. Don't assume, ask. If vegetables are glistening when they weren't steamed. You are looking at some type of oil.

Order your salad dressing on the side. Then dip your fork in the dressing before you fork the lettuce. You will be amazed at how much you don't need. I only eat 1/3 of what I would eat if I poured on the salad.

Sometimes you can ask your waitress/waiter what would be a good choice.

Today starts the 2nd week of the 6 week "Lose for Good" challenge. I promised I would set a goal before I left WW and I did.

I decided to make it about activity. For one reason I will be going to Beth's soon for the 5k walk and I need to practice. The 2nd reason is based on advice from the group. This week I was distracted with problems from Irene. It was a very emotional time for me and I was distracted and even though I was tracking what I ate I was not focused on make good choices all the time- eating and activity. I asked the group what they did to refocus. One lady takes her dog (because the dog doesn't need to talk and anyone else would want to talk about the problems she is dealing with) and they go for a walk at a place called Soos Creek. Another lady goes to the gym and runs on the tread mill.

So... my 2nd week challenge is: Walk 30 min 5 days, Walk 10 min on Mom's treadmill M, T, W, F.

Going for my next challenge: Husky game

I just hate it when I stumble right out of the gate....

I can be distracted in a nano second. It's been 13 days since I started and I can't believe I only wrote the first blog and then nothing. Now granted a million things happened and all were important but I have to find a way to make this work. We are talking about my health and a potential job.

I didn't want to bore you with details daily so I had intended to write each week after the meeting. I've learned that once a week is not going to be enough. So I'll try to keep it brief but daily. Otherwise, I allow myself to get side tracked and I need you to keep me honest. I do realize that I'm the person allowing the distractions. Never more....never more. If only I were a raven....that's a story for later.

I'm happy to report that last week I lost 1/2 pound taking me to another low. Last week's meeting was about the challenge "Lose for Good". It's a six week program and the objective is to donate food that equals the number of pounds that you lose during the six weeks. I've lost 30 lbs so far so I'll bring in 30 lbs of food plus whatever I lose in the next 6 weeks. Weight Watchers will match what I bring and it will go to a local food bank.

To help us keep on track for the 6 week period, Michael challenged us to set a different goal each week. One week you might focus on water, another on journaling food, another on activity, etc. I was totally derailed emotionally so I didn't set a goal and therefore didn't meet one. I'm going to have to hide in class tomorrow. I just hate it when I don't do my homework. But I will go in and face the music and Michael is not as hard on me as I am on myself.

Before I leave the meeting - I will set a goal. No excuses.

Tomorrow will be interesting. I've had verocious ravenicitis...(spelling may be off but you know what I mean). I did manage to eat healthy but too much healthy is not a good thing. I also managed to log each day everything I ate, even when I went over my points.

Talk to you after the meeting.

PS. I had a great workout tonight. On Friday Brooklynn comes to visit and she and I have a 30 min dance-a-thon before she goes home. The problem comes after I take her home. I've done all this great activity, it's 830pm and I'm home alone... Jerry is in the bed. Usually I have a snack and then another snack. Instead I called Beth and we discussed an alternative. You got it.... I'm blogging. Going to bed. LL
